The Xinhua News Agency is a state institution with
headquarters in Beijing. It collects and posts domestic and
international news on politics, the economy, culture and
other areas of life.
Xinhua started overseas
broadcasts in English in 1944, and its first overseas branch
was set up in 1948.
After the founding of new
China, Xinhua became an influential press agency. It has
domestic and international news departments, and has opened
some 100 offices around the world, including its
Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Latin American and African
Bureaus. Its daily releases are published in Chinese,
English, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. Feature
stories and photographs are also offered. Correspondent
offices in Hong Kong and some foreign countries publish and
issue news bulletins, and photo services operate out of Hong
Kong, London, Paris and other major cities. Xinhuas
world-wide wire service provides news in foreign languages
to newspapers, radio stations and news agencies everywhere.
Head and branch offices are connected by a dedicated
telecommunications network. Xinhua has signed cooperation
agreements with news agencies and information ministries of
80 countries.
