Foreign Envoys in China Visit the 50th Anniversary of Democratic Reform in Tibet Exhibition

(2009/03/26)

On March 25, 2009, at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, more than 150 foreign envoys in China, representatives of international organizations and diplomats from over 100 countries and international organizations visited the 50th Anniversary of Democratic Reform in Tibet Exhibition at the Beijing Cultural Palace of Nationalities. Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Hongbo and officials of related departments held cordial talks and jointly visited the exhibition with the foreigners.

With unprecedentedly large scale and long duration, it is the first major exhibition with the theme of democratic reform in Tibet held in China. The exhibition has five parts, i.e. “Peaceful Liberation of Tibet”, “Crackdown on the Armed Rebellion”, “Democratic Reform of Tibet”, “50 Years of Conflict between Reunification and Separation, Progress and Regress”, “Great Achievements of Economic and Social Development and Human Rights”. So far there have been nearly 100,000 domestic and foreign visitors to the exhibition.

In the exhibition hall, 10 Tibetologists, based on their personal experience and research results, introduced from different dimensions to the foreign envoys the policy of the Chinese government on Tibet and the significant political, economic and social achievements of Tibet since its democratic reform 50 years ago.

At the end of the visit, some envoys said that the exhibition, being objective and truthful, presented a sharp contrast and vividly demonstrated the darkness and backwardness of old Tibet and the progress of Tibet today. The visit allowed them to see a real and progressing Tibet and they were deeply impressed by the earthshaking changes that had taken place in Tibet over the past 5 decades.
